Dealing with Non-Readers?

Friday, October 8, 2010

Said to me on the plane (randomly) by my seat mate today as I happily read away in To Kill a Mockingbird.... "Are you actually reading that voluntarily?!?!?"

Me, with a tone more condescending than I intended: "yeeahh....."

Him: "Wow, I didn't realize people actually did that. That was the kind of thing we had to read in school."

Me: "Yeah me too... I'm just reading it again."

Returned to my reading.

I shouldn't feel so annoyed by these types of comments, but I find them incredibly obnoxious and have nothing to say in return!

LOL
You my darling should feel superior and proud :)
That silly simpleton doesn't know what he's missing, huh?

Thanks for sharing! :)

it's seriously amazing how many non readers there are. What a twit. At least you know you're ten times smarter than he is.

I must admit that I'm one of those people who does feel superior when people display such ignorance. :) I recommend looking at the non-reader like he's the crazy one and moving on.

I agree with Trisha , He's the ignorant one. I love that though as I think about how people call me a bookworm and I smile as thats what people called all those great literary writers e.g Jane Austen , Bronte Sisters. It makes me feel superior and proud as Im likened to them lol.

I think that we can all agree that people are strange!

I think it is kind of funny when people are incredulous that I read. By choice! I can't imagine NOT reading but to each his own--I guess we all have our own hobbies.

I wonder if it was a different book if it would have been the same comment.

Non Reader comments are eye rolling worthy though.

A couple years ago, I bought a bunch of books at a thrift store. The lady who checked me out looked at me almost with pity and said, "What's wrong? Ain't you got no TV?" Yeah.

I was reading a 600 + page book, and I was asked "are you going to read all of that?" Um...no, i'll stop 300 pages in.

I don't think I'd have a witty comeback to this guy either, but I'd secretly think him a moron....

Juju -- Thanks! And that's what I was thinking... they don't realize what they're missing...

Karoline -- hehe, yes that is true!

Trisha -- Haha! I will do that... I even think I sort of did that b/c I was annoyed!

Paula -- LOL! That's a great way to look at it!

Bonnie -- And I am to him, lol!

Lola -- I agree! I wish other people felt that way too. I hate that reading is looked down upon!!!

Marce -- yeah, I definitely think if I had been reading Davinci Code or something I wouldn't have gotten the comment.

Amanda -- omg!! Now that's ignorant!

Jennifer -- LOL that is too funny!! Um, yeah... that's the plan... heheh!

Suzanne -- and I did, LOL!

Suzanne -- (the moron part I mean)

Probably an awkward attempt at flirting gone terribly wrong.

That made me laugh! Especially the part where you lied and said you were "reading it again". If I remember correctly, you're reading it now because you HAVEN'T read it before!!!

Books just don't factor into some people's lives. Strange, isn't it? My sister is an example. She would never sit and read a book, thats just crazy boring to her. And then there is ME. same blood, same parents. completely different folks.

I would have responded the same way.

I completely agree! I struggle with non-readers... total dealbreaker.

I also don't understand non-readers and usually find that I have nothing to say to them. Some people think it's really weird that I read so much, but conversely, I think it's weird when people don't read!

Argh. I travel frequently for work and am always a plane -- I feel bad for those that truly have missed out on reading. Almost feel bad, I should say. I'm proud of my book obsession.

Thought you might like an old post I did when I had had it up to here with traveling one day... Coffee and a Book Chick...Don't Be Like Bob

Ha I'm a bit late on this response, but that is an awesome story. I love when people act condescending to me because I'm reading a BOOK. Ha. I end up feeling so smugly superior.
